36 militants, six troops killed in fierce clashes in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD - RTT - 11/09/08 - Fierce clashes between security forces and militants in north-west Pakistan resulted in the death of 36 militants and six troops Wednesday, reports quoting an army spokesman said.
Pakistan's military launched a massive onslaught to take control of the Taliban's command and control system in the Rashkai area of Bajaur district in the country's lawless tribal region Tuesday.
"With the support of gunship helicopters, tanks, and artillery, Pakistani army and paramilitary Frontier Corps cleared the area of the insurgents and seized complete control over it," said army spokesman Major Murad Khan.
At least 25 miscreants were killed, an equal number of others arrested, and large quantity of ammunition and improvised explosive devices were discovered, he added. Six soldiers also died in the action.
Pakistani troops have been fighting the Taliban since August 6 in Bajaur district, from where the rebels target US-led international forces in neighboring Afghanistan.
In a raid in the hide outs in Kuza Bandai area of the restive Swat district Wednesday morning, security forces killed at least 11 Islamic militants.
